"Preserve Your Fine Carpet With Proper Cleaning..."

Although good, regular vacuum cleaning can remove a majority of the soil in your carpet, it can't replace a periodic deep cleaning.

......There is no truth to the myth that cleaning your carpet frequently will make it get dirtier faster.  In fact, your carpet will perform better and last longer if it is regularly cleaned.

The recommended time frame for cleaning your carpet is every 12-18 months.  This will depend largely on how many people live in your home, and how much foot traffic your carpet receives.

Combined with spot treatments as necessary, your carpet will stay newer-looking much longer.

The best option for cleaning your carpet is hiring a professional company.  An experienced professional knows what kind of treatments work best on which types of carpet fibers.

They also have equipment with more extraction power than any rental units that are available to the general public.  They are also able to clean your carpet in a manner which will allow it to dry faster, reducing the chance of mold and mildew occurring.

The hot water extraction method, or steam cleaning method as it is more commonly referred to, is recognized as the industry standard, and the best method for cleaning carpet.

The process involves spraying a mixture of hot water and detergent onto the carpet, and then using a self-contained or truck-mounted unit to extract the solution from the carpet.

This not only cleans the surface of the fibers, but will also reach all the way to the base of the carpet fibers for a deep down clean.

If you do decide to rent a deep cleaner and do it yourself, there are a few things you should consider before you begin:

carpet cleaning graphic Some rental companies may offer cleaning systems that are similar to what professionals use.  Read the instructions, or ask the salesperson how the machine works.

If it can't clean your carpet to dry within 12 hours, it probably isn't worth renting, as it may actually harm your carpet.

Similarly, the units that are available for rent in many grocery stores will over-wet your carpet, and don't have enough extraction power to remove the excess water, leading to mold and mildew problems.

carpet cleaning graphic Carefully control the amount of water that you allow to saturate your carpet.  A carpet that stays damp after 24 hours will begin to experience damage and bacterial growth.

carpet cleaning graphic Do not use silicone-based products on your carpet.

carpet cleaning graphic If your carpet has a stain-resistant coating (many do), make sure you only use products that are formulated for use specifically on treated carpet.  If you compromise the stain resistant coating, you will not only experience more frequent and hard to remove stains, you may also void your carpet's warranty.

carpet cleaning graphic Never use bleach or bleach products on your carpet.

carpet cleaning graphic After cleaning, speed up the drying process by opening windows and doors, using fans, or using a dehumidifier to remove moisture.

Finally, as stated earlier, good vacuuming is important in maintaining your carpet's beauty, and extending its life for as long as you need it.

Make sure you get a quality vacuum with strong suction, thus avoiding the problem of having soil migrate to the base of the fibers, and even through the carpet backing and onto the sub-floor.

A little bit of time and attention to your carpet will go a long way when it comes to protecting your investment.
