Choosing Your Carpet
"Easy Guide to Choosing Your Rugs & Carpet..."
If you are like most consumers, you may not be well versed in carpet knowledge. There are a number of things to consider when looking to tastefully and artfully cover your floor.
.....Knowing what types of rugs and carpets are available is a good starting point. The two most commonly purchased types of carpet are loop pile and cut pile.
Loop pile is manufactured by pulling both ends of each piece of yarn through the carpet backing, creating a small loop.
Saxony, shag, textured, and velvet are all examples of loop pile carpet.
Loop Pile
Cut pile is manufactured similarly to loop pile, with the loop then being cut to form straight pieces of yarn. Sisal, cable, and the ever-popular Berber are styles of cut pile carpeting.
If budget is an issue, olefin carpet is an economical choice. Used for both indoor and outdoor carpet, it is colorfast and stains can be easily cleaned.
However, it is also easily crushed, and may be less aesthetically pleasing than other types of carpet fibers.

If you are concerned about high-traffic areas of your home, nylon carpet may be a good choice for you. Highly durable, it will stand up to a lot of wear, though it is one of the more expensive types of synthetic fibers.
Acrylic carpet, which is sometimes referred to as "man-made wool", may be a good choice for homes in damper areas, as it is resistant to mold and mildew. It will also retain its shape well and spring back even after having heavy furniture placed on it. However, nylon carpet is not recommended for high-traffic areas.
Wool Carpet
Perhaps the "Cadillac" of rug and carpet fibers is wool. If money is no object, wool carpet is a decadent and luxurious way to cover your floors. Though installation may set you back a little bit more, wool carpet will provide a lot of bang for your buck.
Not only is it rich looking and feeling under your feet, it is highly durable as well, and may last up to 30 years and even more.
Naturally, color will play a big part in your selection of carpet. Lighter colored carpet can give the feel of spaciousness to smaller rooms, and can provide a good contrast to darkly painted walls.
Of course, the drawback to light-colored carpet is that it will show signs of staining quickly and may need to be cleaned more frequently. If you have small children or pets, a medium to darker colored carpet might make more economical sense.
Soiling will be less noticeable, and your and carpet won't need to be cleaned as often.
Now you have some ideas about selecting new floor covering, but what about buying an antique carpet......
