Choosing Carpet Cleaning Machines

.....When it comes to home carpet cleaning there is a wide variety of carpet cleaning machines to choose from.

The most commonly used is a vacuum cleaner.

Most people prefer an 'upright' vacuum cleaner over a 'canister' for convenience.

Many homeowners prefer to use a 'hand-held' for stairs and other carpeted areas that don't offer maneuverability.

Upright Vacuum

An 'upright' vacuum cleaner can be used with one or two motors, depending on the type of dirt that accumulates and the type and frequency of cleaning required.

Some people also like to use 'spotters' for spot cleaning. These usually have rotating brushes to scrub the stain off the carpet. In order to select the right carpet cleaning machine, you also need to be sensitive to the carpet's fabric.

Another type of carpet cleaning machine is called the 'carpet cleaning extractor'. The extractor is ideal for deep cleaning. Use a regular 'carpet cleaning extractor' or a 'self-contained' one. A 'carpet cleaning extractor' is suitable for deep cleaning as it literally extracts dirt from an entire carpet, not just from its surface.

If you use a 'self-contained carpet cleaning extractor', it injects a cleaning solution in the carpet and extracts it and it can also be used to vacuum the carpet after the process of extraction has been completed.

Steam Cleaning Carpet

Many people also use 'carpet steam cleaners' for deep cleaning. As you would guess, 'carpet steam cleaners' use steam to draw dirt out of carpet surfaces, bases and fibers. It is considered extremely effective and several users of these machines say that it helps them get rid of all the dirt in their carpets, even if the dirt has seeped into the fibers and the base of the carpet.

The steam injected by the machine loosens dirt and brings it closer to the surface. Then the dirt is vacuumed, leaving the carpet dirt free.

Other factors to consider before purchasing or renting a carpet cleaning machine are size, attachments and accessories. The choice of attachments, particularly cord length, should be determined based on the dimensions of the carpeted area. Accessories, such as different kinds of brushes, can be added for specific problems such as frequent food stains or dirt related to pets.

Carpet Cleaning Chemicals

What are the best carpet cleaners?  Your choice will depend upon the carpet fiber and the type of stain or dirt to be removed.

There are mainly two kinds of carpet cleaning supplies; liquid-based or powder-based. Within both categories, some are meant for stain removal, some are used as disinfectants, others for absorbing moisture, and finally for general cleaning.

When deciding upon which stain removal product to use, focus on the type of stain and select a product accordingly. There are cleaners that effectively remove liquid stains, such as coffee and those that specialize in pet stains.

Powder-Based Cleaners

Whether you choose a liquid or powder-based product will depend on the character of the stain. A stain is caused by a liquid, but dries up and has a hard surface, can be brushed off after being sprinkled with a powder-based stain remover.

A stain that is caused by a liquid but does not have a hard surface after it dries will need to be treated with a liquid-based stain remover. There are some powder-based stain removers that can absorb liquids that have caused a stain if the area is still damp.

For general cleaning, select a product based on the kind of dirt to be cleaned. If a carpet is dirty mainly because of dust and dry pollutants, a powder-based cleaning supply can be used. However, if a carpet is dirty because of dust, dry pollutants and any kind of moisture, a liquid-based product will be a better choice.

Sometimes, there might be clean moisture in a clean carpet. For example, a clean water spills on a clean carpet. In such situations, a powder-based product, which acts as an absorbent can be used.

If you need a product to clean as well as disinfect, be careful about how it smells and how it feels. Those who use the carpet might be allergic to either or both, especially if they are in the vicinity when the cleaner is being used.
